CHOOSING AN EQUIPMENT RENTAL CONTRACTOR
Making the right choice of hire contractor is as important if you’re Mr Ordinary doing a home DIY job or a multibillion dollar global mining giant . Choosing the wrong one can cost not only money, time, opportunity and valuable resources, but it can also impact negatively on people’s health and safety.
Hire equipment needs to be maintained to high quality standards and the operators need to be fully trained and competent otherwise there may be risks involved – and not all contractors do fulfil their obligations. For example, mobile plant is the largest cause of occupational deaths on rural properties in Australia.
The weekend gardener wanting a small dozer rental for his new patio or the multinational requiring gigantic mining equipment hire in remote locations both have the same safety needs. Quite simply, the issue of safety means different things to different rental contractors. Some unscrupulous contractors cut corners when it comes to providing adequate operator training and support and they take short-cuts when it comes to maintenance and repairs and servicing of their equipment.
It’s also important to ensure that you get the appropriate safety information from the equipment hire contractor before signing any contract.
You may want to consider the following points before making any commitment :
· Are vehicles and equipment serviced and maintained regularly, ie after each short-term contract and regularly during long-term project? Ask to inspect maintenance schedules if you require proof.
· Do the operators have the appropriate skills and training ? Ask to see certification of their training qualifications.
· Are you satisfied that the contractor can provide sufficient advice and information as to how a particular piece of equipment rental is operated and used, be it a digger, dump truck, front-end loader hire or a lawnmower? In other words, will they advise whether the item requested for rental is suitable for the purpose that it’s intended, and will they inform you of any certification requirements that the operator needs, what protective equipment is required etc?.
· Other aspects to consider are the age of the equipment, the range of equipment, availability, capability, the terms of the contract, the locality and back-up, what brand of machinery eg Komatsu etc.
Some facts about the number of injuries that occur during DIY activities illustrates the importance of the safety issue, as well as the need for using reliable rental equipment operated by skilled personnel. Figures show that in the United States, a disabling injury occurs every four seconds and in Victoria, Australia, 15 people a year are killed and at least 2 000 seriously injured carrying out DIY projects.
A careful choice is necessary when it comes to choosing an equipment rental contractor. Don’t make any commitment until you’ve done all the research, asked all the hard questions and got the answers you were looking for – it’s just not worth taking a chance.
